Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about UPS systems, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

An online (double-conversion) UPS continuously converts incoming AC power to DC and back to AC, providing complete isolation from power anomalies with zero transfer time. A line-interactive UPS normally passes utility power through to the load and uses an autotransformer to regulate voltage, switching to battery only during outages with a typical 2–4ms transfer time. Online UPS is preferred for mission-critical applications, while line-interactive offers excellent protection at a lower cost for less sensitive equipment.
To size a UPS correctly, add up the wattage (W) or volt-ampere (VA) ratings of all equipment you want to protect. Then add a 20–25% safety margin for future growth and inrush currents. For example, if your total load is 2,000W and your UPS has a power factor of 0.9, you would need at least 2,500 VA (2,000W ÷ 0.9 × 1.25). Also consider the runtime you need during an outage — longer runtimes require additional battery capacity through external battery packs.
Standard VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) batteries typically last 3–5 years under normal conditions, though high temperatures or frequent discharges can shorten this lifespan. Lithium-ion batteries offer significantly longer life at 8–10 years. We recommend performing regular battery health tests every 6 months and replacing batteries proactively before they reach end of life to avoid unexpected downtime.
Yes, most ATENCO UPS models support external battery packs (EBPs) for extended runtime. The TM11E and RM11E series feature dedicated EBP connectors allowing you to add one or more battery cabinets without modifying the UPS itself. The number of EBPs you can add depends on your UPS model and the charger capacity. Contact our technical team for specific EBP compatibility and runtime calculations for your configuration.
PF (Power Factor) 0.9 means the UPS can deliver 90% of its VA rating as real power (watts). For example, a 3 kVA UPS with PF 0.9 delivers 2,700W of usable power. Higher power factor means more efficient use of the UPS capacity. ATENCO’s online UPS systems feature PF 0.9 output, providing more usable power compared to older designs with PF 0.7 or 0.8, allowing you to power more equipment with the same VA rating.
ATENCO UPS systems support SNMP monitoring through optional network management cards. Install the SNMP card in the UPS’s communication slot, connect it to your network via Ethernet, and configure the IP address through the card’s web interface. You can then monitor UPS status, receive alerts, and manage the system remotely using any SNMP-compatible network management system (NMS) or ATENCO’s PowerGuard software.
Regular preventive maintenance extends UPS life and ensures reliability. Key maintenance tasks include: visual inspection of the unit and connections quarterly, battery health testing every 6 months, cleaning air filters and vents semi-annually, verifying fan operation, checking for firmware updates annually, and performing a full load test yearly. For three-phase systems, we recommend an annual preventive maintenance visit by a certified technician.
ATENCO provides a standard 2-year warranty on all UPS hardware, covering manufacturing defects and component failures under normal operating conditions. Batteries carry a separate 1-year warranty. Extended warranty plans of 3 or 5 years are available for purchase at the time of order or within the first year. Enterprise customers can also opt for comprehensive service agreements that include preventive maintenance, priority support, and advance replacement.
