TM31E 3:1 UPS FAQ

Answers about TM31E three-phase input / single-phase output architecture, 10–20 kVA capacity, PF 1.0 output, parallel operation, battery runtime and monitoring options.

What does TM31E mean?
TM31E is a 3:1 online UPS, meaning it accepts three-phase input and delivers protected single-phase output. It is designed for sites with a three-phase building supply but single-phase critical loads such as server racks, telecom equipment, security systems, industrial control panels and IT infrastructure.
What is the difference between TM31E and TM33E?
TM31E is a three-phase input / single-phase output UPS, also called 3:1 UPS. It is used when the site has a three-phase supply but the protected loads are single-phase. TM33E is a three-phase input / three-phase output UPS, also called 3:3 UPS, and is used for full three-phase critical loads. Choose TM31E for protected 220 / 230 / 240 Vac single-phase output; choose TM33E 10–40 kVA when the load itself requires three-phase output.
What capacities are available for TM31E?
TM31E is available in 10 kVA, 15 kVA and 20 kVA models. In standard PF 1.0 configuration, the UPS provides matching kW output capacity: 10 kW, 15 kW and 20 kW. S models include internal batteries, while L models are designed for external battery cabinets and longer runtime requirements.
Can TM31E run on a generator?
Yes. TM31E supports a wide input voltage range and 40–70 Hz auto-sensing input frequency, making it suitable for generator-backed sites and unstable utility conditions. Its input PF ≥0.99 and low input THDi help reduce upstream electrical stress when properly sized with the generator system.
Can TM31E be paralleled for redundancy?
Yes. Up to 4 TM31E units can be configured in parallel for capacity expansion or N+X redundancy, subject to model configuration and project design. Parallel cabling and configuration must follow the installation procedure.
What monitoring options does TM31E support?
TM31E supports local and remote monitoring options including USB, RS-232, RS-485 / Modbus RTU, dry contact, EPO / REPO and intelligent slots by configuration. The optional TM550 SNMP card enables network monitoring, web access, event alerts and NMS / BMS integration. Relay card options are also available for dry-contact signalling.
What battery runtime options are available for TM31E?
TM31E S models include internal VRLA batteries for standard backup requirements. TM31E L models support external VRLA battery cabinets for longer backup time. Battery quantity, DC bus voltage and cabinet configuration are selected according to UPS model, load level and target runtime.
Which applications is TM31E not recommended for?
TM31E is not the right choice when the protected load requires three-phase output. For full 3-phase input / 3-phase output applications, use TM33E, RM33E or TM33-ET depending on capacity, form factor and project requirements. For sites with only single-phase input, use TM11E or RM11E single-phase online UPS instead. Medical-grade or isolation-specific projects should be reviewed against the project’s electrical, certification and isolation requirements.
